There are many theories by different authors like Nancy K.Baym,Craig R.Scott and Marshall Scott Poole just to name a few. that attempt to explain the phenomena of New Media. Through many of the theories such as Socail Presence Theory. Gross Theoreticl Pluralism, and social identification approach, they all are basing their findings on similar premise that new media is simply expanding communication between a single relationship to include internet based communication (ie blogs, social media website, virtual communities). It is true that technology innovations have origins from the 16th and 17th century beginning with writing and has expaneded to have the common communication from writing to now texting and over web communication. New Media is not only expanding communication between a single relationship, it is also opening up new relationships and opportunities that were otherwise not there a decade ago. Social Media and other internet based technologies is the natural succession of the development of the wide world web. Based in groups, social media networks are intertwined groups of a bigger group. This allows for one certain group to eventually be connected to another group based on the database and people involved. This connects everyone in the world in one way or another. Facebook has opened this way of communication to the next power. Facebook uses common criteria such as hometown, high school, and workplace to match persons to whom the query chooses is the best choice. The criteria can connect a person living in Detroit, MI to a person similar origins. This then has the potential to connect the citizen of Detroit with other friends in China of similar interest together. Eventually everyone will be connected in some way or form. These groups or interconnected social media group have allowed for a new platform to exist for enterprise. Because of the recession, traditional forms of conducting business have had a hard time staying in the black. Social Media has allowed for business to streamline their expenses and business in general consolidate and use social media as an outlet for advertising, employees and gain customers. The natural succession of technology is the further use world wide web commonalities to eventually do everything you need in life.
